This second book was brutal and deadly but fulfilling. One thing that‘s certain about these books is that they are definitely not boring; there is a lot to unpack. At the end of book one, things felt uncertain, at least, as far as what direction things were going. I feel like elements are progressing towards something. Also, what felt like a love square is becoming something less confusing for both us and the characters, I least I think it is?

The preceding book, An Ember in the Ashes, put a typical Romeo & Juliet romance in the midst of a futuristic battle for power. The sequel picks up with Elias and Laia on the run. Laia is determined to save her imprisoned brother and the author adequately explores the issue of whether saving his life is worth risking so many others. While brave, Laia's just not as interesting as Elias who is put In a situation that allows him to grow into an even more likable and impressive character. Chap

TW: ableist slurs, sexual assault threats, torture, mentions of genocide, You know how in books with multiple POVs you sometimes get a POV that's kind of slow and let's you take a breather before to go back to the storm? Yeah, this book never has that. Every POV is filled with its own drama and suspence and stress, so much stress. Sabaa Tahir does not let a person breathe. Every chapter filled me with stress. None of these kids let me breathe! Every time I'd end a chapter I'd literally need

How did anyone wait until yesterday to get the third book. I can not process this. I loved it so much and I'm excited to dive right into book three.
