My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.

But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He's tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.

Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

Everything, Everything is a very quick read/listen…so quick that I couldn't be upset with anything, not really, but I also didn't find any of it to be all that real, or heartfelt. They were cute characters, at least the two main characters, already can't remember what their names are. The romance between them was very sweet. This book…while not everything it was…something, I guess.

Nicola Yoon writes beautifully. She deftly evokes the exquisite be-all and end-all suffering of teenage love without trivializing it. I devoured this book in one sitting. The reason for my low rating is quite a spoiler, so please don't read on unless you've read the book. No, really, don't read this unless you've read the book. It will ruin the entire thing. This was the worst. The actual worst. In specific, the way Madeline's mother is portrayed and treated by the author made me extremely annoyed. The thing that occurred to me is that this woman is a terrible mother even if Madeline's illness was real. It's not okay that she completely prevents her daughter from having any sort of social life despite the fact that it might be difficult. “Everything's a risk. Not doing anything is a risk. It's up to you.” This book started quite beautifully-written with diverse characters, including an Afro-Asian narrator called Madeline.
