Welcome to a universe obsessed with religion, gloves, and tea. Good golly, do they love their tea. A slow-building political space opera that leans slightly to the former, the chapters alternate between Breq's past and present, slowly converging like a zipper tied to an hour hand. While I would not consider this book "essential for the modern science fiction fan," there's still a fun ride underneath the political drama and more so if that's your cup of tea.

Thrusts you into an original, imaginative universe with interesting characters and a briskly moving plot. Not your typical SF setting, very enjoyable.

The protagonist of this book is unlike any other I've ever read. This takes some getting used to at the start, but I really enjoyed the unique perspective. While the setup was a bit challenging to me as first, the plot is paced well. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

The flashbacks coupled with changing pronouns made this a difficult book to get into. Once I had a hang of the characters and the situation with Justice of Toren though, it was a great story. There is an enormous amount of behind-the-scenes world building that Leckie alludes to parts of, I look forward to future installments in the series.

This book is a frustrating mix of flashes of real depth and interest, diluted by meandering, confusing, info dump-y nonsense. The concept of the AI is fascinating, but - aside from a few crucial scenes - spotily executed. The ideas on language, translation and culture are good, but stiltingly conveyed through phrases like "the joke made sense in radchaai".
