I think this novel is best perceived by military members and veterans as it does a great job of describing the military experience in general and especially during WWII.

Great book. I've heard it described as propaganda, which I can definitely see. It is VERY pro-military and makes it clear that in the book's world, anyone who serves is better than anyone who doesn't. I have 0 military background and still enjoyed it quite a bit. If you are expecting the movie, you will be disappointed. It is very much an intellectual traversal of war and the military.

Heinlein's novel bears little resemblance to the 1997 Paul Verhoeven movie, being more focused on civic duty, motivation, and other philosophical ideas than on the action itself. The war sequences are nice enough, but the real meat here is in the philosophical asides framed in History and Moral Philosophy classes. Entertaining enough, but I preferred Stranger in a Strange Land.

The plot here is very weak. It is a quick read, and maybe worth hearing out Heinlein on his points of view.
