Butcher does a wonderful job creating another good Dresden book. Dead Beat swerves sharply into the darkest areas of magic and how the past of the White Council can come back to haunt them. There is good progress on plotlines introduced in the previous novels to keep the plot of the series moving along at a steady pace.

I'm bumping this up to 4 stars! Dead Beat has easily become my favorite with Death Masks a close second. In many of the pervious books, the conflict is personal to Dresden, but this one finally felt as if the implications were world wide. We're introduced to new magics, enemies and plots developing that force Dresden to confront his true self and what he fights for as much as what his principles are. I think this is where Mr. Butcher has finally found that niche where everything fits nicely!
