In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. After recommending to a friend, they aptly labeled this book "Nerd Candy". I have to agree. This should be required reading for anyone in their thirties who played video games, (Arcade and MMORPG) and is a fan of 80's pop culture. So many references to take you down highway nostalgia. Not to get pedantic but the writing did become a bit cliche and some plot devices really weren't fleshed out. But these are easily overlooked if you take the entire book into account. It is very fast paced and fun.

I was born mid-80's, so most of the references in this book were things I'd learned once the "new" stuff had been digested. That being said, this was a great and original concept for a book that still appealed to me on multiple levels despite being a 90's child. Worth a read, but not atop my Must-Recommend List.

I've listened to this book twice, and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. So many references to games, books and movies I enjoyed when I was younger made this a very enjoyable book. (The audiobook is read by Wil Wheaton - very good!)
