At this start of this novel, I was slightly unimpressed with Buck being passed on and on from person to person filled with weeks and weeks of heartache for the poor animal. In the end, he finds a companion within man who saves his life from his former abuser. This tale of a dog finding in himself his natural instincts is uplifting in his perserverance.

Buck is kind of an asshole, and I don't much like what the book was getting at, but it was very readable and engaging despite that. Still, the sheer assholery of Buck and his agenda is enough to make me dislike this book and give it a 2 star review.

The prose could have been better. London used the same tone whether he was describing the sounds of the forest or (mild spoiler) Buck tearing somebody's throat apart. It made the experience of reading very bland. It's lucky that the book was so short or I might have dropped it. In conculusion, the book was /okay./

A great Canadian classic worth every bit of the praise it has received over the years. A heat wrenching story which shows you not only the dark side of human nature, but also that of the domesticated (and not so domesticated) dogs. The call of the wild takes you deep into the main character (dog), Buck's, psyche, and has you feel deeply for his and his companion's plights in the harsh Canadian North.
