This book is short but has a lot going on, and it's difficult to get a handle on all of it with a first read-through. Camus creates a protagonist who evinces the reader's sympathy despite seeming to have no sympathy, or strong emotions of any kind, himself. In fact, he is almost inhuman, never reacting to anything with more than mild pleasure or displeasure. The fact that the book remains engaging is a testament to how unusual it really is.

In The Stranger, Camus explores the nature of existence, and the general absurdity of life, society, and the meanings we attach to all of it. It's a sometimes bleak, but always engaging journey into nihilism with some optimism snuck in.
