Maybe it's because I've been reading too many 19th century uptopian novels, but I was pretty happy with this. Sookie was a person I could believe in and also not find annoying. I found myself rooting for people in the book, which is always a good sign with me. I'll probably pick up the rest of them. The show, yikes, it's another matter entirely.

I think Charlaine Harris benefited from the talent of screenwriters and producers. True Blood is really much better than the Sookie Stackhouse novels; the characters are better developed, Sookie's much less irritating when you're not forced to be in her head, and for some reason Ms. Harris sees a need to describe in great detail every change of outfit Sookie goes through. A decent basis for a decent television series, but nothing special as a book in its own right.

3.75 stars. Re-read! I'm Sookie trash forever! I don't love these books because of any phenomenal writing, but I think they're fun & I personally love Sookie. And Eric. I'm re-reading because I don't remember everything that happened throughout the series... and for a break between higher fantasy stuff.
