Dessen's protagonist here is developed from every angle: her friendships, her family drama, her workplace, her collegiate future. Even her favorite foods get a focused approach. It just doesn't leave enough room in the story to spark romantic chemistry, and the love interest's brash attitude towards everything doesn't help. Dessen has insightful views on relationships, both teen and adult ones, but they get buried under too many other narrative layers and convenient plot coincidences.

It was a solid read, but pretty predictable. The main character as a cynical teen who had to "grow-up too early" isn't a very unique aspect of the book. Overall, I still enjoyed it for what it was and it would make a good/quick summer read!
