A coming of age story about a young Ojibwe woman…

Daunis’s mixed heritage and unenrolled status made her an outsider both in her hometown and on the nearby Indian reservation. Now, instead of spending the summer after high school preparing for her freshman year at the University of Michigan, valedictorian Daunis prepares for a different future: staying home to care for her emotionally fragile mother after back-to-back family tragedies. The only bright spot is meeting high school senior Jamie, the newest addition to an elite hockey team, who is eager to hear all Daunis’s stories about the team, tribe, and town.

When she witnesses a murder, Daunis reluctantly becomes part of an investigation into a series of drug-related deaths. Her desire to protect loved ones means pushing away the very people who could be her best resources. Determined to find answers and help a community that hasn’t always accepted her, Daunis must decide what it truly means to be a strong Nish kwe (Ojibwe woman).
