In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he's jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade's devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world's digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator's obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.
But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade's going to survive, he'll have to win—and confront the real world he's always been so desperate to escape.

ireadbooks (Grade: A) After recommending to a friend, they aptly labeled this book "Nerd Candy". I have to agree. This should be required reading for anyone in their thirties who played video games, (Arcade and MMORPG) and is a fan of 80's pop culture. So many references to take you down highway nostalgia. Not to get pedantic but the writing did become a bit cliche and some plot devices really weren't fleshed out. But these are easily overlooked if you take the entire book into account. It is very fast paced and fun.

zak (Grade: B+) A fun, low reading level adventure. Very accessible, and a good, exciting read.

Trouncer (Grade: A–) I was born mid-80's, so most of the references in this book were things I'd learned once the "new" stuff had been digested. That being said, this was a great and original concept for a book that still appealed to me on multiple levels despite being a 90's child. Worth a read, but not atop my Must-Recommend List.

KThomas68548 (Grade: A–) I've listened to this book twice, and thoroughly enjoyed it both times. So many references to games, books and movies I enjoyed when I was younger made this a very enjoyable book. (The audiobook is read by Wil Wheaton - very good!)

sstair (Grade: A+) I felt like this book was written FOR me. If you were a kid in the 80's, you might feel the same.
