The first volume in J.R.R. Tolkien's epic adventure THE LORD OF THE RINGS
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In ancient times the Rings of Power were crafted by the Elven-smiths, and Sauron, the Dark Lord, forged the One Ring, filling it with his own power so that he could rule all others. But the One Ring was taken from him, and though he sought it throughout Middle-earth, it remained lost to him. After many ages it fell into the hands of Bilbo Baggins, as told in The Hobbit. In a sleepy village in the Shire, young Frodo Baggins finds himself faced with an immense task, as his elderly cousin Bilbo entrusts the Ring to his care. Frodo must leave his home and make a perilous journey across Middle-earth to the Cracks of Doom, there to destroy the Ring and foil the Dark Lord in his evil purpose.
“A unique, wholly realized other world, evoked from deep in the well of Time, massively detailed, absorbingly entertaining, profound in meaning.” – New York Times

Muisje (Grade: A–) Great, intimidatingly fat book. The first time reading can be very slow since there are a LOT of names involved (I'm looking at you, Council of Erlond chapter) but please persevere because it is so, so worth it. I've read this many times since I was 12 and it stays as amazing as it ever was.

(Grade: B) Love this series, and have reread it numerous times with enjoyment, but the first time I read this book, it took me multiple times of starting and stopping to get through the first half. It was very slow and bogged down by mythology and history of characters and races that I did not yet care about.

What_truth (Grade: A+) The first book in trilogy, but the second if you include "The Hobbit".
Tolkien has one of the most addictive writing styles that I have encountered. When I read this book, I would often read 20+ pages at a time and sometimes, time permitting, I would just read until I had to stop.
Some parts of this particular novel are a bit slow, but some of the slow parts are integral in building a strong setting in your imagination, so nuances of the characters help them come to life more easily.

Happy_Cat (Grade: B) I, of course, love the story of the Lord of the Rings but I have to admit that it took me months and months to complete these books. I found to writing to be incredibly dry and boring at times, though I could just have finished reading something light before which makes LotR seem even worse. *Sigh* But after finishing and looking back, I realized that I really did enjoy reading it. I suppose I was a bit spoiled by the watching the movies, which feeds you the story in tiny, easy, action-packed,

yeahitskonnor (Grade: A) Incredible world, great characters, a bit slow at times. Not much to say that has not already been said.
