At the conclusion of The Mark of Athena, Annabeth and Percy tumble into a pit leading straight to the Underworld. The other five demigods have to put aside their grief and follow Percy''s instructions to find the mortal side of the Doors of Death. If they can fight their way through the Gaea''s forces, and Percy and Annabeth can survive the House of Hades, then the Seven will be able to seal the Doors both sides and prevent the giants from raising Gaea. But, Leo wonders, if the Doors are sealed, how will Percy and Annabeth be able to escape? They have no choice. If the demigods don''t succeed, Gaea''s armies will never die. They have no time. In about a month, the Romans will march on Camp Half-Blood. The stakes are higher than ever in this adventure that dives into the depths of Tartarus.

a-book-junkie (Grade: B) I have enjoyed all of the PJO/HoO books so far, and this one is no exception! First things first - that message to the readers at the start was just pure gold. But I still don't forgive him for the cliffhanger at the end of MoA. Like in previous books, the pacing is perfect, there is never a dull moment. You get enough description to vividly imagine the action and the characters, and this does not slow down the narrative. It is just like rollercoaster ride when reading one of Riordan's books.

(Grade: A) Somehow, each book in this series just gets better than the one before. This book goes darker as the big showdown in the next book nears. There are some heartbreaking moments here as well. The character development is off the charts. Each character has some serious moments of growth and coming into their own. The pacing and action in the story were also on point.
